I second the aspect of astronomy & Ham radio.  Loved Astronomy here for awhile.

Spent most of my time with scanners though.

Haven't spent much time though lately with the above.  Expensive hobbies!

PS If I recall correctly someone had old linux format magazines and the 
like, If they still have them some of those magazines were focused on 
special interest groups that might generate ideas for outreach locally. 
The programs discussed would have later versions available by now, but 
would be a starting point.
