You don't get what you pay for. Go into a car dealership
and buy a car for twice the sticker price. The car will not
be twice as good for you having done so. I promise!
The saying should be "you pay for what you get".

I think your analogy is a terrible one... the $300 car was a sweet sweet
deal. also, #4, how is being an import a benefit? Worst car analogy

I for one think it is worth it. As an analogy, I used to have a $300 car,
and it worked :)
My newer car cost a whole $1000 more, and it is:
1) a more comfortable ride with more amenities
2) getting better mileage & not leaking as much oil & tranny fluid
3) looks nicer, and nearly as roomy for storage & moving stuff around
4) an import! :)
I see a lot of parallels in this metaphor, albeit because it is personal --
items #1 & #3 are not as easily quantifiable,
but I was able to get hints about the value of those benefits before I
bought it... hope this helps. As with anything,
it depends what you want out of it, and what you can afford (don't forget,
can you afford to wait a while to buy?).
cheers,
Ben
PS - I find it exciting, in the context of helping non-computer-buffs find a
new machine, that we now have a variety of good, sub-$500 portables on the
market -- just keep shopping around; I was surprised to find a great deal on
a Toshiba at CompUSA & pick it up in person (up in PDX) for a client
recently... not too many laptop models support 4GB of RAM yet. Some
Toshiba's, some IBM/Lenovo's, and a few others...
