I'll help, then.

Here are some reasons why I migrated my boxen from Gentoo to Ubuntu
this fall.

Gentoo offers too many meaningless choices. Do I really need to know
which syslog or cron implementation to use? What is the advantage of
dropping matroshka video container support from USE flags?

Gentoo requires infinite tweaking. Many things, mostly system
services, are not configured when you first install them.

There's no defined release cycle. Instead, you're always in mid
upgrade. Similarly, there's no defined way to learn about new
packages. Gentoo Weekly News could fulfill that function, but it
doesn't.

Gentoo security patches are sometimes slow to arrive. (They've been
getting better this year, though...)

If you track security updates, then you pretty much have to track
non-security updates too. That means you should plan to spend around
an hour a day emerging updates.

Emerge breaks a lot. One time in ten, you'll have to clean up the
mess manually.

If you want maintaining your OS to be your lifestyle, then Gentoo is
the very best. If you want to use Linux to get stuff done, then
accept some compromises and use a more turnkey distribution.

Oh, the other good reason to use Gentoo is that it's a great way to
learn how all the pieces fit together.
