AFAIK, the DS won't turn it's WiFi until you start up a game and go into
Multiplayer mode (otherwise it'd be a waste of battery). I doubt there
will be any firmware upgrades for the DS - risking a chance to brick
end-users' DSes just to upgrade the wifi capabilities probably doesn't
appeal to Nintendo. Which sucks (I have one and I'm stuck with WEP + MAC
addy filtering). 

Nice that the Wii updates itself though...
