I have been playing with virtualization for quite some time and haven't found a good single HOWTO that I like. However, there are a lot of good documents and articles at the various virtualization's official web sites.
Both www.xensource.com and vmware.com lead to useful documentation, altho not in a particularly straight forward manner. In general, I have used User Mode Linux (uml) and VMWare and qemu and Bochs and a few others (not counting things like EMU-Dos and Wine.) I would like to try Xen, but haven't ever configured it right. I have gotten it about 90% configured, but haven't figured out all the networking and what not. The documentation is only about 90% as far as I'm concerned. I still have my doubts about virtualization. The idea is cool and very useful. It sure helps with security and portability and such. However, some of the virtualization system have performance issues and most of them aren't entirely easy to setup and manage. Still I use VMware to run Windows on my main workstation and I use qemu to run Knoppix on my main workstation and I use uml to run Red Hat now and then. I may ask why I use three different virtualization systems for this. Well, that is historic. It has to do with which virtualization system I was playing with at the time. More recently, I have been remodeling one of my servers to run several specialized servers under VMWare. I wanted to use Xen, but I was able to get VMWare up and going quickly and it seems to perform ok. Follow-up... I'm trying to acquire a firm grip on the basic details (and issues and complexities) surrounding virtualization. Can anyone recommend a good well-rounded primer? Book or online resource(s). Interesting discussion today on /.
