Fist, I would like to publicly thank the euglug fellas who helped us move. You guys ROCK! Horst, Mike, Allan, and everyone-your help was critical in getting NextStep moved into our new building.
We have three BIG placement projects we are looking for geek expertise on. 1. We are working directly with the Guatemala Ministry of Education for the second year (we have placed computers in rural Guatemalan communities for the last three years). Last year, our computer lab placements affected over 5,000 Guatemalan children. This year we are looking to place 200 computers creating 20 new labs by a June 2007 shipment date. We need help soliciting donations (any one of you work in IT? I bet you do!) building, and testing the hardware. These machines will be running Win 2000 Pro (we are one of 400 Microsoft Authorized Refurbishers in North America). I wouldn't ask any of you to install Windows, but, if you could help us build the boxes, that would be great. Our staff will install the Spanish language Windows and open source software. We are looking to obtain and build 200 PIII 800 or more MHz, 128 MB RAM, 10-20 GB hard drive and 1 laser printer per two machines. We will also include surge protectors, extra cables and hard drives, hubs, and routers. 2. We are now a build partner with World Computer Exchange (http://www.worldcomputerexchange.org>. We are looking at building 200 computers for placement in Africa in June. These machines would run Linux. We are looking to obtain and build 400 PIII 800 or more MHz, 128 MB RAM, 10-20 GB hard drive and 1 laser printer per two machines. Ideally, we would like to create diskless terminals for labs of 20 machines each. 3. Our second placement with WCE will be in San Salvador. We are again looking at building 200 computers for placement in June. These machines would run Linux. We are looking to obtain and build 400 PIII 800 or more MHz, 128 MB RAM, 10-20 GB hard drive and 1 laser printer per two machines. Ideally, we would like to create diskless terminals for labs of 20 machines each. If you have machines you know about that we could get donated, or, if you would like to facilitate your employer's donation, OR, if you would like to help in these projects, please email me ASAP. Along with these placements, we continue to build computers for our community members who do not have access to technology, so, our staff and volunteers can use all the help we can get! Thanks so much for thinking about this and I hope you can join us in bridging that darn digital divide.
