I had Beryl working on all of my desktops using Gnome. It uses a very very nifty trick for changing virtual desktops (ie. Hold CTRL keyboard button, click mouse, and move mouse to change desktops). I love it so much, wish other desktops would implement the mouse click move to change virtual desktops.
However, very memory intensive. ... OK. So not overly memory intensive but I'll admit to online gaming here. :-/ My main point is, I prefer using all my memory for other applications. To install the Beryl 3d desktop, it's as simple as following the Gentoo Beryl wiki. (Unmask some packages, emerge them and restart Xorg.)
