Today I'm on another Linux box, and it's working.  I had to set
network.proxy.socks_remote_dns to true and I had to remove the HTTP
proxy.

Given a computer that works and a computer that doesn't work, it's a
trivial matter of inspecting every bit that's different to create two
computers that don't work. (-:

Now I'm off to configure the proxy autoconfig.
