Fork over the exact model of that 17" CTX. With that information
and a little help from Google you can get the exact capabilities
of the monitor and edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to reflect that
capabilities.

FWIW, CTX VL701-1 has:
Horizontal: 30-72kHz
Vertical: 50-160Hz

with 1024x768 being the recommended resolution (1280x1024 max)

Control+Alt+F2, log in and follow along;
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf , find the lines under monitor and
set Horizsync to 30.0-72.0 and VertRefresh to 50.0-160.0. Go
down further to modelines and make sure 1024x768 is the highest.
Delete 1280x1024 or higher of every line. Save, exit, Alt+F7 to
the broken Xsession, Control+Alt+Backspace to kill it. It should
restart. If not type 'startx'.
