Now we're back on track -- many fine devices exist, but SOFTWARE is the key.
(except for the actual multi-touch input capability.... most hardware does
not have
that, however, I wonder if a multi-scan type of software driver could hack
it,
interleaving the touchpad scan between multiple fingers...)

So yeah, you can put a full browser of lots of things, since most portable
gadgets
are now general purpose computers. I don't know if their is linux support
for
Journada (iPaqs are mostly okay for it, but I have a Toshiba PocketPC,
yech).

So long as the screen is large enough (and/or pans&zooms enough!), it'll
be great, and just about the same as any other full-featured browser on
an ultraportable device. HCI, human-computer interaction, is the CompSci
field which I see starting to catch up here. Like batteries in general, or
regenerative braking systems on automobiles, they've all just been behind
the times.

So no worries Brian, I figured you meant "Killer Platform"... and what
*won't* the
iPhone run?? Well, once the devkit leaks, we'll have emulators out the
wazoo
for it!!! From MAME to Nintendo, to Playstation, to PocketPC and beyond :))
Leak, devkit, leak!! I double-dog-dare ya.

ciao,

ben

Ninendo's DS Web Browser just came out. Haven't had a chance to try it,
but I know it's Opera and pretty much a full browser (minus plugins -
there is full javascript support, but unfortunately they had to drop
Flash support). The dual-screen gives you a couple different options for
viewing a page. The DS lite sells for $130 and the Opera cartridge is
$30. Of course it's Wifi only (no cell network browsing, which sounds
like trouble to me). So my "killer mobile apps combo"?
Web Browsing (and email via gmail): DS Lite with Opera ($160)
Voice Telephony and emergency web-over-cell access: Random Motorola Cell
(came free with my plan)
Full suite of Office Apps: Moleskine notebook, retractable lead pencil,
Bic pen ($10-15)

Oh, and what do I get that the iPhone is missing? I get to play games on
my DS. I'm sure the iPhone will have a couple of crappy games, but
obviously not going to compete with NDS or PSP. Also, I have an adaptor
that let's me run homebrew and use flash memory cards on my DS - I use
it as a MP3 player all the time. And of course, it runs Linux (although
I haven't tried that in a while to see what the progress is on it).
