Is X crashing or is the computer fully shutting down? Have you
gone into your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and adjusted for the monitor?
1440x900 should be the first line for your resolutions. You'll
find the timings in the monitors manual which could be a PDF on
a CD. Either way, you'll want those in there too for it to work
perfectly. It may well be time to do a clean install now that
you have a properly functioning monitor. 

And, YES your monitor has been part of the problem.
