Jim,

The WRT54G should do firewalling and NAT (Network Address Translation)
for you just fine.

As Quentin pointed out firestarter is also available. I would
recommend learning netfilter or using FWbuilder.

Under linux I was just using whatever might be on the clearwire

I have a linksys WRT54G still in the box. Does it have a builtin
firewall, such that if I connect to it by cable it would give some
protection.
Thank You Jim K
PS I know it is stupid using a broadband connection without a firewall.
Under windoze I do use firewall, AV, and Spybot actively and run other
products periodically every 20 - 50 hours of use. And I update
everything in the infrequent times I boot windoze.
