My version of grub doesn't have an ioprobe command. Doesn't have lots
of commands, in fact.
Anyway, I got a chance to play with the laptop last night and solved
the problem.
After the BIOS boots grub from the USB drive, grub thinks the drive's
name is (hd0). So after I installed Ubuntu, I edited
/boot/grub/menu.lst and changed all occurrences of "root (hd1,0)" to
"root (hd0,0)".
The bad news is that the x86 version of Ubuntu (what I installed on
USB) is just as broken with my video chip as the amd64 version (what
I'm running now).
Looking forward to the new avivo drivers... Now that I know
how to make a bootable USB drive, I can try Gutsy tribe 3 and
file bugs!
Thanks, guys, for your help.
