Thanks, Mr. O.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner but we had a bit of a family emergency.
(All's fine now.)

I'll have to set the thing up again to get you a better description
and it's going to take a few days to dig out from under the backlog.

Here's a short list, from memory:

-- boot up error message saying something was defective in the BIOS
and to contact the supplier. I got rid of a couple of other similar
messages by updating the BIOS, but that one stayed.

-- 915resolution not loading. Installed updated drivers, tried every
manual work-around I could find on the internet, no joy. So no
changes in screen resolution and what was loading was such high
resolution that things were difficult to read. Can't remember what the
resolution was.

--After adding a SATA drive to the mix with the old EIDE, things began
really going south. Can't remember exactly what it was, but eventually
resolved some of them by unplugging the EIDE. But a bunch of stuff
stopped working immediately after installing the SATA and still
doesn't. I've got a barely functional WinXP and Mepis64 installation
with a bunch of stuff not working on each. Seems to be at least
largely the same stuff on both OSs. One suspicion is that I may have
fried some of the new chips in the process of installing the SATA. But
on the other hand, some folks have since told me that SATA drives are
touchy beasts and they're entirely new to me.

FWIW, I did some web searches for some of the problems and learned
that others are having the 915resolution issue in Unbuntu or
Ubuntu-derived Linux with that motherboard. But I tried it with a
stack of different flavors of Linux live CDs and only a year-old or so
Puppy got the resolution part right. So that suggested to me that
perhaps I need to build a kernel for this machine. Unfortunately, I'm
moving so fast these days and there are other problems so I haven't
got as far as trying that.

I realize that's probably too general to offer a lot of clues and will
get you better information in a few days unless you tell me not to
bother. :-)

Thanks again for the interest.

Best regards,

Marbux
