Since vi/vim is the default for most linux boxen, it is important to know its basics. However, it has a lot to offer, and some might benefit from a loaded GUI variant, which folks can even get started with (or use instead of wordpad!) on other platforms: http://cream.sourceforge.net/featurelist.html I don't use this, but thought it, or other GUI variants, might help some childrens do learn.
I also wanted to suggest that you can change your EDITOR environment variable on most systems, and for many command-line newcomers and also some old DOS-heads, I find that setting it to nano (GNU version of pico) is very effective. There are certain cmdline admin tools which use vi though.... beware :) Vi is dead, long live vi! ben
