Yes, the componentry framework is Uno, <http://udk.openoffice.org/>. Plus
the JRE, or course. Sun has been doing some work to get a clean separation
between UNO and the apps because of all the dependencies that had crept in
over the years. The plan is to then to work the slimmed down UNO back into
the released OOo product during the 2.x release cycle. I'm not sure how far
they've progressed with that project, There's a description of the project
linked I think from <http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Uno/Efforts>
but the OOo wiki seems to be moving about as fast as frozen snot on a brass
doorknob tonight. IIRC one of the major goals was also enhanced usability so
others could more easily write apps for the framework. The work is being
done for an unidentified benefactor that I would guess might be IBM Lotus
Division.

I can only wish that Star Division had set out to make a better one of
WordPerfect Office rather than Microsoft Office. Or maybe gone beyond the
state of the art and combine the best of the old with some bleeding edge
stuff, like moving the software to the server side rather than leaving it
glued to the client side. OOWriter really sucks big time as an advanced word
processor.
