I thought I'd ask again. I asked a month ago and the talk about Dell was fun but I still want to know what Packages and laptops have the best reputation.

Quite frankly I have no fear of INSTALLING Linux on a laptop, but configuring everything, especially multi media, to actually work is a whole other thing.

As long as I'm in OpenOffice Territory I know stuff will work out, but further, wireless and such, I am leary.

That is why I bought an ASLabs laptop a couple of years ago, but they dropped their laptop line, and now I look at Dell and a few others and want advice.

I found ASL's explanation of why they dropped the line interesting.*

"We dropped the Linux laptops due to poor support for the suspend mode.
That functionality never works consistently or reliably when using the
Nvidia binary driver. With desktop models, we can pick and choose Linux friendly hardware
components. With laptops, there is no choice. As a result, the laptops
that we offered never have the full functionality under Linux. We just
don't think that is fair for our customers. "
