IDE controllers are slowly disappearing. Many new boards have
ONE connector while having at least 4 SATA connectors.
Seriously, influence the move from Zip the thumb drive. Zip
drives often die horrible deaths  it thumb drives keep getting
cheaper. Pick up a couple quality ones and duplicate their data
on them. One source, one backup. 

And Gentoo is the distro for "those allergic to the sun". The
installation process is probably the longest of any other distro
but you end up with the most 'tweaked' system afterwards. IRL
differences are quite minimal when compared to other source
based distros.
