Lane County has *some* available funding for promotion of tourism. I
have suggested that as part of the Google nomination, the County
commit, subject to becoming a Google experimental community, to
focusing this funding on attracting the kinds of tourists who are most
likely to move here permanently to work as telecommuters if we have
gigabit per second internet service in the local region.

Sorry but this just lost all appeal to me. I don't want an influx of people.
For one thing Eugene isn't really set up to handle the number of people who are
already here (infrastructure). The google-thing sounds like a great opportunity
for educational development, and enabling those already here to find decent
non-local jobs. But, if it is just going to be another conduit to draw more
people here, it won't do anything to help the current labor-base of the area
(except give us more mouths to serve burgers to, and asshole attitudes to put
up with on the road). The Talent is already here bub, why not pimp this thing
as a way to provide telecommuting jobs for them?
