In response to Lorraine's question "Does it work well for you?", here is
my Google Voice review based on 6 months or so of use....

Google voice works ok for me but I don't use it to its full potential.
They give you a phone number that will route phone calls to all of your
phones. I played with this a little but I was hearing a slight loss of
sound quality when people called me via this number. Not much really but
enough to make me hold off on making this my default phone number. That
was six months or so ago - it might have gotten better since then.
What I do use it for is the voice mail system and SMS (text messaging).
VOICE MAIL
Google Voice voice mail can be enabled for cell phones even if the
incoming call is made to your normal phone number. In other words,
people who call you don't need to know that anything has changed. Voice
mail features that I like are:
- Playback of messages on the computer,
- Creation of custom outgoing messages for particular callers,
- Permanent archiving of voice mail
- Voice mail transcription to text
The voice to text transcription is not great but it's usually good
enough to understand what the call is about - if not the details.
Google Voice sends you a text message when you have voice mail so you
need unlimited text messages to make good use of this feature.
SMS (TEXT MESSAGES)
Incoming text messages sent via your google voice number get routed to
your cell phone number ( just like a regular text message ) but also to
your google account. This allows you to use your computer keyboard to
respond to a text message rather than using the keypad on your phone.
Of course, you can still use the keypad on the phone if you are not at
your computer. You can also initiate outgoing text messages from your
computer via google voice.
