An easy install is kubuntu (I did v. 9.10 recently) To start with it only requires ca. 3 GB. (but you may want at least 10GB to grow it) Though easy, still try the advanced/expert mode when you chose the partition for the OS (I had an ext3 prepared, but the installer's default was to resize an existing NTFS --pretty dumb in my opinion) The grub boot loader for multiple OSes installed just fine w/o input from my end.
I grew up on mandrake/mandriva and like it the best, especially because of its rich KDE desktop (I don't care for gnome) But this list has a pref for ubuntu, so you get the most help with kubuntu/ubuntu. If you have enough disk space and a partition tool I'd suggest to make a couple more ext3 partitions so you can try several distros, and use a larger partition to backup your own linux data and even distros (in my case, the 3 GB basic kubuntu installation resulted in a 1 GB .tgz file. After an OS/desktop crash it took me only 10 Min to restore the OS including all my customization. OK, I am drifting... Just give kubuntu a try, and if it's not too much trouble start out with several ext3 partitions to have wiggle room. - Horst ----- Original Message ---- From: Robert Freed <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Sun, April 18, 2010 10:42:26 AM Subject: [Eug-lug] linux Hi Y'all, I am tired of paying all kinds of fees(renewals for Microsoft Word, virus protection programs, etc.). I tried linux twice before within the last 10-20 years but got dicouraged setting up the system. I'd like to have Linux on another drive to be reached by dual-boot in at least one of my computers.
