I want to control a rain8net device for irrigation control.
The Linux software contributed from Sean Maloney doesn't compile.
It references a bunch of directories that don't exist. Plus
several of his files are empty (such as README).

I found reference to a ruby library which would allow low
level control. (That's more to my liking.) http://adamtao.wordpress.com/
I am supposed to be able to install it with
"gem install rain8net" but there is no gem program on my system.
I'm running Ubuntu9.10 (and still waiting for 10.04).

Is there a package I need to install to get gem?
Do you know of another way to control this device from Linux?
