There are a couple of ways to diagnose and recover from this, some of
which depend on knowing what model of video card you are using.

If you want to reconfigure the settings of the xserver on ubuntu lynx
you should be able to use the command (as root, from the shell)

dpkg-reconfigure xorg

and it will rerun the scripts that automatically configure the xserver
at installation time. This won't necessarily solve the problem, but if
the problem is a misconfiguration issue then it will fix it.

The other alternative is to start looking through the /etc/X11
directory and restarting the display manager as you change the
configuration.
You should see one or more dated versions of the xorg.conf
configuration file. You can try switching to the previous one and
restarting the display manager.

you'll want to read the man page for xorg.conf if you want to fiddle
with the fine grained configuration.
