IO OUTBURST IN PROGRESS

IJW Satellite Newsletter -- 2001 # 2

Imke de Pater reports an Io outburst is in progress as of Feb. 22, located
at 334 W longitude. She requests that other observers try to monitor the
activity. I unfortunately didn't see Imke's request until a few minutes
ago, and that longitude is now becoming unavailable as Io rotates, but it
will be facing Earth again on Feb. 25 at 16 UT. Please let me and Imke
know if you do obtain observations.

Here is Imke's message:

Submitted to CBAT as an IAU circular:

Io Outburst:

Imke de Pater, F. Marchis, H. Roe (University of California,
Berkeley), B. Macintosh (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories),
S. Acton and D. Le Mignant (Keck Observatory) report an extreme
volcanic outburst on Io. The team observed Io with the Adaptive Optics
system on the Keck II telescope on UT Feb. 19, 20 and 22, 2001, in J,
H and K' bands. On Feb. 20 and 22 the approximately Jupiter facing
hemisphere was observed. On Feb. 22 the region to the north-east of
Loki was very bright in all J, H, and K' bands. The hot spot is
located at a west longitude of 334 $\pm$ 3 degrees, and latitude of 40
$\pm$ 3 degrees North, close to the position of Surt. This region did
not show any discernible activity on Feb. 20. On Feb. 22 the
K'-magnitude was ~5, and in all 3 bands the spot was detectable even
against the sunlit disk of Io. From the J, H and K' photometry the
temperature is estimated to be ~1000-1200 K; an H-band spectrum taken
at the same time suggests a temperature of ~1700-1800 K. We encourage
observers to follow-up on these observations to determine the time
evolution of this outburst.
