In 1989 I wrote an article on the history of Soviet Mars missions. While new information has come to light in the intervening years, it is amazing to see just how many robot missions failed to reach that planet or function once they got there. Venus, a much nastier world by comparison, was a better planet for Soviet probes, ironically enough.
