Subject: [IOPW-satellite] Bill Sinton Bill Sinton, the first leader of the IJW Satellites Discipline, died this morning at his home in Flagstaff after a ten-year battle with Lou Gehrig's disease. Bill was one of the pioneers of infrared planetary astronomy, starting in the 1950s, and he played a key role in the early development of Mauna Kea Observatory. He was one of the first people to observe Io's volcanos from the Earth, and helped to found the International Jupiter Watch in 1987. There will be a memorial service in Flagstaff on March 27th. If you have any remembrances of Bill that you would like to be mentioned at the service, please pass them along to me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). You can also reach his wife Marge directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] John. ----------------------------------------------------------- John Spencer Dept. of Space Studies spencer(at)boulder(dot)swri(dot)edu Southwest Research Institute (303) 546-9674 (voice) 1050 Walnut St., Suite 400 (303) 546-9687 (fax) Boulder CO 80302 |
