Onderwerp: Funded studentship 'Co-creating Citizen Science for Innovation' at
DJCAD, University of Dundee

I'd be very grateful if you could share this opportunity with your networks,
many thanks, Mel!

Please find below details of a funded studentship at DJCAD, University of
Dundee

The deadline for applications is Friday, March 25, 2016

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship on 'Co-creating Citizen Science
for Innovation'. The studentship it is directly linked to two H2020 projects
that provide rich opportunities for engagement with communities of practice and
interest.

The first, ‘Making Sense’ is a H2020 Collective Awareness Platform ICT10a,
currently underway, for which Mel Woods is PI and Prof Ioan Fazey is Co-I. The
second, a substantial award to be announced shortly is led by University of
Dundee in the area of Citizen Science and Sensing.

Under the supervision of Mel Woods (main PI), and Prof Ioan Fazey (Co-I) the
projects bring together experts from WAAG Society, IAAC, United Nations FAO,
Met Office, FutureEverything, Starlab, IIASA, James Hutton Institute and Parrot
and many more.

Project Description:
During the past 5 years, Citizen Observatories (CO) have emerged, led by the
European Commission, with the aim of addressing critical environmental
challenges [1]. The vision of CO’s centres on the benefits that participatory
citizen science and low cost sensing technologies can offer multiple
stakeholders including citizens themselves. Currently, the dominant model of
citizen science is contributory (observing and collecting data) however several
bodies of theory suggest that the impacts of collaborative (data collection,
project refining, disseminating) and co-created models (co-design and
co-production of projects) have the potential to support collective
intelligence. At the same timewe know that knowledge exchange and diversity
matter in collaborative situations, and that discovery, invention and
innovation are more likely to arise when people of different backgrounds work
together. The impact of collaborative and co-created citizen science projects,
therefore, is the potential to transform the collective experience and the
capacity of science, as well as address governance, decision making, innovation
and transformation for critical environmental challenges.

This PhD is focused on the the vision to move from a ‘contributory’ to a
‘co-created’ model of citizen science (Bonney 2009) [2], and will work with
H2020 projects to help define opportunities and challenges as well as evaluate
this transition. It will interrogate which conditions and approaches support 1)
specific participatory practices critical for issue and question definition,
expert, local and situation-specific knowledge, data analysis as well as, 2)
innovations arising, be they technology, scientific, or social. The student
will have access to citizen science campaigns, participants and datasets, and
will use observations and ethnographic methods to analyse activities and
outcomes. In return the PhD will make a contribution to defining Citizen
Science resources for education (MOOC) through toolkits that are being
developed that will lead to the sustainability of the projects in the long
term.

Evaluation and Criteria
• Candidates should have a 2:1 or above degree, or an appropriate MSc, in a
subject relevant to the project under consideration
• In stage 1 applications will be assessed on the quality of the candidates,
which will encapsulate academic ability, candidate motivation, writing skills,
quality of references and experience. These will be assessed via the paper
application.
• A further evaluation stage will be carried out for applicants who pass stage
1, which will incorporate an interview/visit to Dundee.

How to apply:
Your application must include the following documents (ideally sent as a single
file):

* A CV and cover letter stating:
* The project(s) you are interested in (3 maximum) in order of preference
* Why your background makes you suitable for the role
* Why the particular projects are of interest to you.
* A short summary of your final year or MSc project

These should be sent to Mrs Shirley Fox
([email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>) by the 25th March.
Informal enquiries can be directed to the project supervisor Mel Woods
