well... there are a number of things to consider, which i feel need to be voiced. the first is that making any such announcement at all - rather than none at all - could be viewed as very helpful, given that if relations are not very good and john is taking the initiative to invite people to resolve them, one could reasonably say that to create such an opportunity would be infinitely better than leaving things as they are. so, in that regard, it could be argued that your assertion is incorrect. another perspective could be simply that the time of only three days before the conference is not itself helpful. i would ask why, unlike at technical presentation which can often take weeks to prepare for, it would be necessary to have greater than three days to think about what you would like to say and what you would like to hear said: surely, unless there is much more to it than it first appears, three days would be more than adequate to prepare for such a discussion? would that be a reasonable assertion to make? i feel that it is, i don't know about anyone else. assuming that it is, lastly then we have the issue that you may be simply expressing some surprise (or alarm) at john's announcement, and may simply be "de-stressing", which is a perfectly legitimate thing to do *AS LONG AS* everyone else - john included - is aware that that is what you are doing, and is happy to accept - but otherwise not react in any kind of adverse or detrimental way - to your statement. ( now, given that john's undergoing treatment this last is more relevant to you, john, than it is to anyone else. your health is more important than anything else - EP's future included in that) so, andreas, would you care to clarify what you meant, if you think it would be helpful (please consider that carefully), and perhaps also, separately, if you really _did_ intend to simply "de-stress" on a public mailing list, you might like to consider apologising to everyone especially john. we're programmers and sysadmins. we sit in front of screens for long periods of time. sometimes we forget that there are people - real people - at the other end of the internet. conferences are a great place and time to get away from the screens, and talk. i don't know about anyone else but i am beginning to appreciate that the more i do that, the better off i feel. l. _______________________________________________ EuroPython-Improve mailing list EuroPython-Improve@python.org https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/europython-improve
