 a 3G USB dongle as backup i found, generally, worked well, despite
warnings received about mobile phone connectivity being "extremely
patchy" in the concrete-steel-laced building.

 i have two - one three.co.uk and one vodafone: the vodafone one
doesn't have any credit on it but if you're stuck that's easily
rectified.   usbserial modprobe aliases are all that's required -
unlike the newer usb dongles from huawei which deep joy of joys are
registered as a usb memory stick when they power up, and require a USB
message sent to them (for which there is even a debian package
including a udev hotplug script... deep joy) in order to get them to
flip over to usbserial.
