Pollution-prevention award nominees sought

San Luis Obispo � Nominees are being sought for the annual
air pollution prevention awards.
The award is open to any group, organization or business in
the county that reduces air pollution with innovative and
effective strategies. The deadline for nominations is
Friday, Aug. 16.
Examples of clean-air efforts suitable for the award
include:
�Development of new technologies or materials that reduce
pollution emissions;
�Innovative alternative transportation projects;
�Public education, such as school outreach; and
�Overall commitment toward promoting good environmental
stewardship.
Criteria include feasibility of the efforts, long-term
benefits, creativity and environmental leadership.
Most of the past winners have been businesses, said Aeron
Arlin- Genet, an air quality specialist with the district.
She is hoping this year will be different.
�The outreach and personal commitment categories have not had
many nominations,� she said.
Nominations should contain the name, address and telephone
number of the nominee, a description of the air pollution
reduction project and the name and phone number of the
person or group submitting the nomination.
Past winners include Stanley Motors for promoting the GEM
car, also known as the Neighborhood Electric Vehicle, and
Laguna Cleaners for developing a cleaning process that
reduced the amount of solvent emissions.
Winners will be showcased in a display at the county
government center during Pollution Prevention week Sept.
16-22. They will also receive official recognition at the
Sept. 25 meeting of the Air Pollution Control District board
meeting.
