Peter's being conservative on 10 years. There are
many 25 to 50 year old ni-cads out there just working
away.
The SAFTs I have are over 27 years old and putting
out more than their rated output still despite my
serious abuse overcharging them 5 times until the
water boiled out because of bad timers or operator.
Mine were free, takeouts from hospital UPS units.
Check your battery dealers that do UPS work, they
may give takeouts to you for free too. Military and
aircraft use them too.
My guess that with a good charger in EV service
they will last at last 20 years.
This and longer range, almost no losses from high
discharges, charges like others do allowing more
range. Also low temps don't bother them.
Until li-ion tech matures, Ni-cad are the best
choice for EV's over the long haul.
