ExtraEnergy Bike Test 2002 almost finished
The distance test for the Pedelec and E-Bike Test 2002 in
Thuringia are almost finished. Results will be finished in
mid September. New in this year's test: hill range,
assistance mode and Test Seal. As in the past years the
2002 Test is based on live test riding. Each test bike will
be ridden in its different assist modes by 5 test riders of
different age and physical condition. The test riders run
every bike until the battery dies. The test track will be
the same as in 2001 located in Tanna, Germany, near our
headquarters. Different riding surfaces including flat,
uphill and downhill sections as well as some stop and go
have been chosen to simulate what could be an every day ride
in cities and suburban areas.
In addition to the standard test in Tanna, we have picked a
mountain track in Kirchheim Teck, Germany, to test the hill
climbing capabilities of the products. In this test, the
assistance rate of pedelecs will be measured with the help
of special equipment that exactly monitors the riders muscle
power. Thanks to this new technology, ExtraEnergy will be
able to add two significant columns of data to the test
reports pedelec assistance rate and mountain range.
Publication of Test Results All tested vehicles will be
presented in the ExtraEnergy TEST Expo at IFMA Cologne
(September 12-15, 2002), togehter with their test results.
The exhibition will be located in the entrance hall of the
Cologne Fair. The test results will also be published on
the ExtraEnergy Website.

Scooter-Test underway
The second test crew is en-route. Equiped with on-board
computers, they are checking out distance ranges and of
course top speeds. The old as well as the young testers
from 16-65 are having the time of thier lives getting the
max out of the Gliders, Electric Surfers, Charlys and other
scooters.
In the City-Test the riders have a fixed 2,5 km long track
that they repeat until the battery is dead. The average
distance is about 16 km.
Each Scooter is equiped with a speedometer that measures
average speed, total distance, trip distance, and time
traveled.
In the Level-Test the scooters are taken on a flat track,
ideal for getting the most distance out of one charge. In
comparison with the City-Test we will see how stop and go,
hills, and uneven pavement effect the distance.
We aren't finished with the City and Level tests yet. But
the first mountain tests have shown us what these scooters
have got - or what they don't.
In the Mountain Test the scooters are checked for their top
speed on a 8% grade and on a 12% grade. At 8% the most
powerfull scooters are the Tante Paula, and Heinzmann
Electric Surfer with belt drive.
In the Climbing Test the scooters are tested with 110- 265
lbs. to see if they can get going. They are tested on a
specially constructed ramp that can be raised in 1 degree
incraments. Every scooter is tested until they can not get
going with the minimum 110 lbs.

Ascending Slope test seperates the wheat from the chaff
Starting on a hill with up to 265 lbs. of weight and
increased slope really shows what these scooters have got -
or what they don't. The victor: Heinzmann Electric Surfer.
In the Climbing test the scooters are tested with 110- 265
lbs. to see if they can get going. They are tested on a
specially constructed ramp that is raised in 1 degree
gradients. Every scooter is tested until they can not get
going with the minimum 110 lbs.
In order to reach the exact weight of 110, 165, 220 and 265
lbs., the test riders wear backpacks filled with weights
needed.
Even though the test is not completely finished, the victor
is clearly: Heinzmann Electric-Surfer with a belt drive from
Taiwan UQM. 28% was no problem even with 165 lbs.
A tense test and a cause for a wager or two! The test
continues ...
