bullet Lava Beds gets fleet of electric vehicles 08/30/02

Air and noise pollution at Lava Beds National Monument
should be reduced, thanks to the donation of four electric
"THINK" vehicles from the Ford Motor Company.

THINKs are zero-emissions low-speed vehicles that help to
reduce air and noise pollution. Five hundred vehicles are
being donated to national and state parks and other federal
managed lands in California. The overall donation is the
largest gift of alternatively fueled vehicles ever made.

The donations were made possible through the National Park
Foundation's Proud Partners of America's National Parks
program. Ford is one of the National Park Foundation's five
corporate Proud Partners of America's National Parks.

"Lava Beds National Monument is very grateful for the THINK
electric vehicle donation," said Superintendent Craig
Dorman. "The THINK vehicles will provide Lava Beds with a
form of transportation that will help us conserve energy and
promote sustainable management practices."

Lava Beds will use the donated electric THINK vehicles to
shuttle staff short distances in the park to conduct
interpretive programs, collect visitor use data and manage
campground operations.

"The THINK vehicles are a very valuable donation and will
promote an alternative form of transportation in the park
for short trips," said Dorman.

"We created THINK to help find unique solutions to
environmental transportation challenges," said Susan M.
Cischke, Ford's vice president for environmental and safety
engineering. "The National Park Foundation partnership is a
perfect fit for the goal and the THINK neighbor is a perfect
fit for use in the parks."

Overall, California national and state park will receive 250
two-seat THINK neighbors and 250 four-seat THINK neighbors.

The low-speed electric vehicles are designed for commuting
on speed-limited roads, resorts and golf courses or as
security or maintenance vehicles inside business parks,
corporate campuses and industrial areas. The vehicles, which
have a top speed of 25 mph and a range of up to 30 miles,
are battery powered and can be recharged using any household
outlet in six to eight hours.
