That's an interesting project your working on, I don't know anything about
the S-10s, but I like the idea about the transfer case, I have worked on
several transfer cases 241? from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, It uses a viscous
(spelling) coupler that transfers power from the rear wheel output shaft to
the front wheel output shaft when it sense a different speed between the two
shafts, the Jeep uses a simple full time front axel but drives and corners
like a two wheel drive.  My take on this is that the front axel and shaft
just floats along at road speed until needed with minimal drag, as for using
it as a two speed trans be aware that it has a very wide gear ratio, but
without a trans it just might be what you need.
