This may be because there is low voltage limit at which inverter
reduces drive current not to allow the pack to drop below that.

Adding only one 12V battery now requires higher voltage pack still 
drop to the same voltage before this reduction kicks in, so it 
will happen with deeper discharge of each battery. If they are stiff,
this means many more miles later (may or may not be 25% more though).
