Motorola Energy Systems Group Announces Testing Capabilities
for Proposed Regulations for the Transportation of Lithium
and Lithium-Ion Cells and Battery Packs
ATLANTA, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola Energy Systems
Group (ESG), a business of Motorola, Inc. today
announced that they have the capabilities to perform testing
that enables companies to comply with proposed changes to
regulations affecting bulk transportation of lithium and
lithium- ion cells and battery packs.
The U.S. Department of Transportation is proposing changes
that would harmonize U.S. regulations with the latest U.N.
Model Regulations. The International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO) is expected to make similar changes to
the ICAO Technical Instructions this year and corresponding
International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The proposed regulations would affect all worldwide bulk
transportation of lithium and lithium-ion cells and battery
packs launched after January 1, 2003. As it is currently
written, these lithium and lithium-ion cells and battery
packs would be required to pass a regime of tests that
include altitude, thermal cycling, vibration, shock,
external short circuit, impact, overcharge and forced
discharge testing.
Motorola Energy Systems Group has been actively involved
with various industry and regulatory agencies regarding
these pending regulations. Based on this involvement, ESG
has developed the capability to test lithium and lithium-ion
cells and battery packs for compliance. These test
capabilities are available to a broad range of companies who
use lithium or lithium-ion chemistries in their products,
through ESG's product testing services organization.
"Motorola Energy Systems Group is committed to supporting
our customers and ensuring there is a continuity of supply
so that original equipment manufacturers can fulfill their
demand for portable products," said Padmasree Warrior,
corporate vice president and general manager, Motorola
Energy Systems Group. "As part of our commitment, we are
offering testing services to anyone with the need to
transport lithium and lithium-ion cells and battery packs
around the world."
