Man on electric scooter charged with DUI
Lake City Reporter From staff reports
A Lake City man was arrested Tuesday and charged with
driving his electric scooter under the influence, according
to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Reports say Delbert Lee Ward, 70, was driving his scooter
north on Marion Street in the parking areas and veering into
traffic, causing drivers to swerve to avoid him and his
scooter. After observing Ward's erratic navigation, the
trooper decided to pull him over.
The trooper said he smelled of alcohol and his speech was
slurred, reports say.
A breathalyzer test � taken at the FHP station � showed Ward
to have a .17 percent blood alcohol level. The legal limit
in Florida is .08 percent.
Lt. Mike Burroughs of the FHP said people should realize the
right of way extends from utility pole to utility pole. He
said any parking lot or area that public has access to is
considered a roadway.
If someone is riding a bike, scooter, lawn mower or other
vehicle while under the influence, Burroughs said it is "the
same as driving a car with the same penalties."
After his arrest, Ward was taken to the Columbia County
Detention Center for booking.
