Electric cars may escape Edinburgh toll charges
JEAN WEST ELECTRIC cars and other "clean vehicles" could be
considered for exemption from city congestion charges under
a radical �1.5bn transport scheme to rid Edinburgh of
traffic chaos and pollution.
Green transport, including the Ford electric Think car, is
already being tested in the city despite the fact that the
motor group is abandoning production. The trials are part of
a long-term strategy to improve air quality by 2005.
A conference in the capital yesterday showcased the best in
green transport to encourage the city council to promote the
use of cleaner fuels and power systems instead of petrol and
diesel.

Andrew Burns, executive member for transport with Edinburgh
City Council, said he would consider putting the exemption
proposal forward. A similar scheme has already been adopted
for the London congestion toll scheme, which starts in
February. Those who use clean cars will not be asked to pay
the �5 charge.
"It is a possibility in Edinburgh, although there will be no
prospect of onstream charging until 2006," he said.
"We are the only local authority in Scotland to have
published an air quality action plan and we won't meet
specific targets if we don't do something."
