In which city can they really commute at 70mph without
using the HOV lines?  They are most likely stuck in
traffic doing 10mph while the ICE is idling most of
the time burning gasoline for nothing while I pass
them doing 60-70mph on HOV lines ;)  The funny thing
is that it seems like they never try to find an
alternative.

Now, you can see the power of denial.  I often compare
this to smoking.  Smokers know very well that smoking
would probably kill them.  But, they still smoke no
matter how strong the evident is.
