Sure. I don't watch TV but I'd watch that as a clip. DivX will be
fine. If you do this, please leave the screen size and bit rate up
there where it will actually be watchable. Broadband can handle the
big files. Dialup users are SOL at any bitrate so they'll need to
find a friend with a CD/DVD burner.

Hi list,

a challenge for you but not after a short intro of myself, as
this is my first post to the list:

I am originally Dutch, moved to Sunnyvale, CA in 2003 because
of work and have been driving a Prius as the closest to an EV that
I could lay my hands on and that allowed both range and a family.
In the Netherlands I have constructed a 3,000 Watt PV system on the
roof of the house that I sold when moving.
Usually I ride a bicycle to work, but my office is moving to San Jose
so the commute will be 10 miles - still possible by bike but to regain
some of the time as well as to cater to an old dream, I like to go the
route of using an EV (my house is already an EV emergency charging site,
so why not make this a permanent charging site)
(I am also delighted to avoid starting any ICE for short trips around
town when doing errands, pick up people for church and so on.)
Anyway - I found a '91 BMW 318i with blown engine and good body and
after some browsing discovered a recently crashed '83 320is EV with
GE motor and adapterplate.
Both cars were built with 1.8i 4 cylinder motors, but the transmissions
appear to have different part nrs and drive shaft length and coupling
is likely different. (although both are manual 5-gear)

Now the main question:
Anybody know if the 320is adapter will fit the 318i transmission?

I am trying to avoid hauling two cars to my place only to end up with
two incompatible halves.

Last resort (if the mounting is not the problem) may be to bolt the
electric motor AND 320 transmission into the 318, even if the drive
shafts are different, then carefully measure the two shafts, cut each in
half and weld one new shaft, converting from 320 transmission to the 318
differential. Anybody that has done that before?

Sorry to ask all the questions that may have been answered before, hope
any of you can tell me if I am on the right path to a functioning and fun
to drive EV.

I plan to use around 192V on the 9" GE motor which is specified for 99.4V
and 201A (if I read the plate right) with max 23hp but at almost double
voltage it should peak close to 100hp.
I still need to figure out which controller to use/build/rebuild.
(I prefer second-hand over new as a way of life: my bicycle is second hand,
my Prius is a salvage, most furniture is second hand, I buy used books at
Amazon and so on.)
(Batteries will likely be new, unless someone has a good pointer for 32x
6V or 16 x 12V batteries with more than 100Ah (at 1hr rate) and preferably
well below a max of 1500 lb.)

Thanks in advance!

A tip from the saavy computer user who sometimes gets stranded away from
hi-speed internet: look in your email client for the option "download
headers" this will download just the mail subject and size of the note. It
will not download the content. Then if you see a note with a large size,
you can just delete it. One more click, and it will download all the rest.

I do this all the time when using my cell to access the internet, and it
works quite well.

Another tip: use "inbox rules" to filter mail you never want to see. For
example, everytime I see receive a note from the "Grim Reaper" the computer
routes it to the deleted items folder. Use it for your favourite person.

Subject: NO ATTACHMENTS please!

Please DO NOT send file attachments to the EV list.

DEFINITELY don't send large ones!

Previously, the SJSU listserver filtered attachments as an antivirus
strategy. The server is currently scanning messages instead. So, it is now
possible for anyone to attach large files to messages.

Please don't!

We have a number of people who read the list over dialup connections. A
large attachment can take several minutes to download, and may be of no
interest to them. In some cases they may be paying by the minute for either
internet access or the telephone connection, so they may be paying real
money for the attachment that you might have added almost without thinking
about it.

Therefore, please refrain from sending attachments. Photos and other binary
files should be posted on a web site, and a link provided in a message to
the list.

Some may be tempted to respond that "everyone should get broadband." Think
about it: the EV list has readers worldwide, and some regions - even in the
US - are not yet served by a broadband connection, or at least not by a cost
effective one. Some folks can't even afford $30 a month for a broadband
connection. Others just don't want to pay even that much. Still other
choose dialup for their own personal reasons. (FWIW, I happen to be a
dialup user myself.)

If attachments become a recurrent problem, I'll have to ask the listserver
manager to reinstate attachment filtering.

Thanks, folks.

Dear Grin,

I just completed a compilation of shipping comments. There are a few pearls
of wisdom about insurance and use of a credit card. You might catch a few
others.

Here the comments:
Compiled by Peter Eckhoff
>From EVDL on shipping 10/21/2003 to 7/23/2004
June 2, 2005

Lonnie Borntreger:
I used TNT - http://www.tnt-inc.com/ - to move my ICE from Chicago to
California. They're a little more expensive, but it was completely
hassle free, with an on-time guarantee - and they have great customer
service.

Here is where I looked to find highly rated transporters in preparation
for my move: http://www.howwerate.com/

John Lussmyer:
I used Kiwi Karriers out of Port Townsend, WA to ship a Sparrow from MI to
WA.
Of course I purposely told them that there was no hurry, and take as long
as they wanted. Took a month or so, but I did get a good price.

Rudy:
Hello - I'm new to the list. In fact I just had my volkrabbit sent to me
from CA to TX via DASautoshippers (the company ebay recommends)
http://www.dasautoshippers.com . I've used them several times
before and have always been happy with them. I'm loving the voltsrabbit
too, by the way :) . Good luck

James Jarrett
I used shipauto
http://www.shipauto.com

to ship my Henney from California to NC. There were a couple of false
starts getting the car picked up (the mis-keyed the zip code and went to the
wrong place first time), but other than that it went smoothly. Only cost me
about $900.00 to ship coast to coast and I got it in 4 days.

They do door to door shipping.

Brad Waddell:
I used Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS) 800-826-1083 - they did a great job,
had tracking all the way so I always knew where my car was.

Mark Hanson:
I used intercitylines.com 1-800-221-3936 to ship two GE Elec-Tracs,
attachments and associated paraphenalia from Roanoke VA to Inverness,
California last year. Took them a couple weeks to pick up but their prices
were reasonable.

David Brandt compilation and may duplicate some of the messages herein:
Mike Chancey:
I used M & W Trucking, Inc out of Odessa MO. They moved my Forces from New
York to Kansas City for $650 each, and they were quick. Their phone number
is 816-230-7895 or mobile 417-850-8718.

Derrick J Brashear:
dependableautoshippers.com shipped my 84 Daytona conversion from the
seller in Burbank to me in Pittsburgh; It took them less than a week from
pickup to dropoff including 2 days delay on the dropoff because I was out
of town.

The seller's comment on the receipt when she gave it to the driver at the
other end was amusing:
"Electric car. Drive like golf cart."

a.k. howard:
Might want to check out Passport Transport, which is a a division of
FedEx.
  www.passporttransport.com.

Regards, A.K. Howard, Las Vegas NV.

Tom Peterson:
I have a flatbed (20ft), and I and my son in law have hauled cars and trucks
to be restored. This is not a commercal enterprize. Get with me at:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mark A Klemosky:
Reliable Carriers.

Brad Waddell:
I have used two carriers:

http://a1-auto.com/ A-1 Auto Transport, INC 1-800-452-2880

report: very inexpensive, but they damaged my wheel & tire and would not
cover my replacement cost, but I used a VISA card and was able to dispute
that amount, so I would use them again because it was so much less
expensive.

Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS) 800-826-1083 http://dasautoshippers.com/

White glove treatment at a premium price, about double A1.

Bruce Tucker:
I have been trying to get an ev shipped from Florida to California since
April. Based upon a low/reasonable bid in line with others, I made a
reservation with A-1 Auto Transport (www.a1-auto.com). While the stories
the told me were plausible (truck broke down), in the end they never did
even come close to giving me a confirmed pick-up date. The worker the
assigned my case to never returned calls (at one point confessing she wasn't
allowed outgoing calls) and her voice sounded like she had no life in her.
I wonder if the increase in fuel prices is causing some of this backing out
of deals.

I still had a few days left on my original 30 day quotes from other
transporters, so I re-read this FAQ post, and some of the others about
transporters used for ev's and started calling back a few. I tried trusted
auto, but only got voicemail. Wanting to talk directly with someone who
answered the phone. I kept looking. I ended up with Dependable Auto
Shippers (www.dasautoshippers.com) who were just about twice as expensive.
On the other hand, they picked up the car in two days, and it will be here
within 2 weeks. I should mention that one of the reasons it was more
expensive is that they stated that whenever a car has been modified, they
require the use of an enclosed transporter. I also elected to go with their
insurance ($119), so if they burn out the controller by applying forward
power while rolling backwards it will be covered.

So far so good,
Bruce Tucker

Ben White:
You might try Blueline Carriers, 626-967-3020.
They shipped my Honda Civic GX from LA
to San Jose for $150. I don't think they have
a web site, but the invoice (I still have it!) says
they serve the states of CA and GA, among others.

Good luck!!

Peter

A customer sent us this email:

California has just shot themselves in the foot by not allowing people with electric vehicles to charge them at home plugging into their commercial power. DUMBB, DUMBB, DUMBB. I guess they "rationalized" that the "inrush" current in many cases would be too great and could result in fires and wiring problems in most situations.

Anybody have any idea what he's talking about? Since when?

Cor, if you do not get an answer from here, I suggest to ask a BMW forum if
the tranny from an '83 320is is a bolt replacement the 1.8l motor of a 91
318i. Another place to ask is the local BMW wrecker.

PORTLAND, Ore. - A crash at Portland International Raceway during
an electric car race on Monday pinned a driver inside his car.

Emergency crews say one of the cars crashed and somehow trapped
the driver.

Portland firefighters arrived with a tool to help get the driver
out and although the man had no trouble breathing, he was
injured.

Crews loaded him onto an emergency vehicle and brought him to the
hospital for treatment.

Anybody have any details on this? Specs on the car involved? Speed? Damage? I like to collect anecdotal info for the times people ask, "What happens if you get into a crash?"

<<< Unless you have bike plenty of lanes around, in which case, you're a lot
better off than an NEV because they are not allowed in bike lanes. This
is why I got a moped-class scooter, instead of an NEV. I commute to
work on a 45mph expressway, but I ride in the bike lane. Works great! >>>

There may be a bit of confusion on the bike lane legality:

[Vehicle Code (VC) 406(a) defines a motorized bicycle, commonly called a moped,
as a two- or three-wheeled vehicle which can be temporarily propelled by pedals
or by an electric motor. An automatic transmission connects the wheels to an
engine which produces less than 2 gross brake horsepower. It has a top speed of
30 miles per hour on level ground.

A motorized bicycle is also defined (VC 406[b]) as a device which has fully
operative pedals for human propulsion and has an electric motor with an output
of not more than 1,000 watts and cannot be driven at a speed of more than 20
mph on level ground. The motorized bicycle cannot go faster than 20 mph even if
assisted by human power. These vehicles must operate so the electric motor is
disengaged when the brakes are applied or when the starter switch or mechanism
is released. A motorized bicycle may not be driven on a freeway, bicycle path
or trail, equestrian trail, or hiking or recreation trail unless the path or
trail is on, or next to, a roadway or permission to use the trail or roadway is
granted by local ordinance. A motorized bicycle may be driven in a bicycle lane
on a roadway at a reasonable speed and with special care for bicyclists using
the lane.]

It appears riding a moped (VC 406[a]) in the bicycle lane is NOT legal, while
riding an ebike (VC 406[b]) or a scooter (the type with a 15mph top speed) in
the bike lane is.

Subject: Evercels - What to do with them?

I have 24 Evercel MB80-12 batteries, new in their boxes. Shortly after I made this (relatively expensive) purchase, Evercel kind of dropped off the map. Emails and phone calls have gone unanswered (the voice mailbox for warranty issues is full -- SURPRISE!) and I am very concerned about safety issues with these batteries, given the fire that one user had with them.

It sounds like Evercel knows about these problems because they're not making these batteries any more, so ideally I'd like to get my money back from them (ha ha).

Does anyone have a contact name at the company who will actually (A) answer the phone or (B) return a call?

Absent this option, is there any kind of non-profit organization where I might be able to donate these batteries? For example, can they be safely used in motorized wheelchairs? Maybe a technical school that would be able to use them for something? If you know of any, please contact me off-list.

All in all, a pretty disappointing end to what I had hoped would be a cool upgrade for my E-10 pickup. Now I'm looking at Valence li-ion or good ol' lead-acids to hold me over for a few years until someone else comes out with a battery that will give more range...

I just got in a couple of truck loads (20 pcs) of full 50 lb CO2 industrial fire extinguishers. They are cart mounted in pairs but I am thinking of pulling the cylinders off and selling the carts and wands seperately. I do a lot of mig welding but this is more than a lifetime supply for me and I am running out of space. Don't want to mess with shipping them, but if you are close enough to Phx and mention that you saw it on the EVDL I will let them go for $70 a pair. `Bout 5 feet tall, 150 lbs ea (full). Same dia as a normal CO2 cylinder. Would have to rig up a simple adapter to be able to run a normal regulator. They are in perfect condition but I am not sure whether these would need to be recert to be refilled, date on the tank is 10 years or so back. I am going to use up 2 pair myself and then make wind bells out of the empties, unless someone absolutely has to have them all. If interested drop me an e-mail OL and we can get together.

Hi (again) Cor & welkom to the EVDL,

It was the specifics you mentioned below that I didn't have when you emailed
me earlier about my '82 320 conversion. Also, this evening when I got home,
I found copies of "as-built" drawings from '95, an acrylic template of the
tranny/bell housing, AND the original "home built" alum adaptor plate which
was never installed (3/4" T-6 w/hard anodize from Boeing surplus).

If you're around this Saturday, I'll drive my current gasser-to-EV donor
('95 318i w/5-speed: shhhhhh, don't tell'er) and the other "stuff" to your
place and we'll do a first pass check. As Don (and I) mentioned, next we'll
check w/nearby BMW shops (Allison, as in Bobby, BMW & Dinan are both less
than 5 miles from your house:-)

Best regards,
Jim Waite

From: Cor van de Water

...I found a '91 BMW 318i with blown engine and good body and
... a recently crashed '83 320is EV with GE motor and adapterplate.
Both cars were built with 1.8i 4 cylinder motors, but the transmissions
appear to have different part nrs and drive shaft length and coupling
is likely different. (although both are manual 5-gear)

Now the main question:
Anybody know if the 320is adapter will fit the 318i transmission?

Shari,

What's this person talking about? The only problems I've heard about are simply
limitations of their landlord or home owner. There is no law preventing people
from charging EVs. There are certain safety standards, like having tripping
hazards which cords strung across public walkways. And there are certain
problems with PG&E rates for those who aren't recognized by the utilities as
owning and charging an EV.

Please have this unknown person provide specifics - location, city, exact
situation, etc. Otherwise this is too vague to pursue any serious discussion...

Subject: Can't Plug In At Home in CA???

A customer sent us this email:
California has just shot themselves in the foot by not allowing people with
electric vehicles to charge them at home plugging into their commercial power.
DUMBB, DUMBB, DUMBB. I guess they "rationalized" that the "inrush" current in
many cases would be too great and could result in fires and wiring problems in
most situations.

Anybody have any idea what he's talking about? Since when?

Yes please! Make it available as a torrent maybe if you're worried
about the server load..

Be careful, it's probably illegal for you to copy and distribute it. However,
if someone were to somehow get into your
personal storage folder... well, I don't know about that either. If you do
though, don't delete the ads, we need to
know who to write to, to express thanks for their support.

I would recommend that those who would like a copy get it right from The
Discovery Channel. It's not that expensive
and it shows the producers that there is an interest.
Unfortunately a search on TDC doesn't reveal a way to get a copy from them.
Perhaps one of "the speed-hungry,
rubber-burning, adrenaline-pumped electro-nerds" know how... ^-)

--- Begin Message --- Here are the brains that brought you the EV-1. They show off their candy & EVen don't crush their old EV prototypes. What a concept, they sell them. But it's the kid in a candy store with a nickel and it's not 1950 but 2005 syndrome. There just isn't the right mix of price to performance. I hope they are successful with their Scion project. Personally I think they aught to put their drive train in a Porsche or VW replica or kit car. You'd get close to the same weight of the Tzero and there is no problem getting parts. I'm tired of drooling over their machinery and not being able to afford it. For now limited to good old trusted steriod infused forklift and golfcart technology. I'll take my one M&M please.

Arcaners,

For the first time since the the Bolinas Cyclecar Club was formed, 4-
years ago, we had a "3-Wheelers Only" gathering. It happened on May
21st, 2005 and here is a photo link to the event. Most of the cars
will be familar to Arcane Auto Society members who have joined us for
previous events, but there were a few "new" cars as well:
