Just to clarify, the batteries in this conversion are marine type with
threaded studs sticking out of the top of the SAE posts. It was never
suggested that the studs be removed; it was the lugs (ring terminals) on
the cables that were to be "lopped off" so that proper SAE clamps could
be installed on the original cables and clamped onto the existing SAE
posts.

Roger.

I can see it now... "But officer, look under the hood here, this is
just a forklift motor and a few batteries!"
This is a good thing about organized racing, if you can win a race
you convince a hundred (or even thousands) of people electrics can be
fast.

Some make it even simpler: battery ==> motor :-)

Tim, people can comment on the show by either calling Discovery at
1-800-889-9950 and ask for viewer relations or go to
http://extweb.discovery.com/viewerrelations and fill out their form in
order to make your comments.
Judging by the amount of fan mail I received either the tide is turning
or it just had to do with the time slot right after the most popular show
on cable TV, not just the Discovery Channel.

Be careful, it's probably illegal for you to copy and distribute it.
However, if someone were to somehow get into your
personal storage folder... well, I don't know about that either. If you
do though, don't delete the ads, we need to
know who to write to, to express thanks for their support.
I would recommend that those who would like a copy get it right from The
Discovery Channel. It's not that expensive
and it shows the producers that there is an interest.
Unfortunately a search on TDC doesn't reveal a way to get a copy from
them. Perhaps one of "the speed-hungry,
rubber-burning, adrenaline-pumped electro-nerds" know how... ^-)

I followed this link through a couple of other sites and found out
about the new Honda Big Ruckus. It seems to be a cross between a
scooter and a motorcycle.

If you could get it without the gas motor, it might make some good

Here is section 406(a) quoted directly from the CA Vehicle Code website:
406. (a) A "motorized bicycle" or "moped" is any two-wheeled or three-wheeled
device having fully operative pedals for propulsion by human power, or having
no pedals if powered solely by electrical energy, and an automatic transmission
and a motor which produces less than 2 gross brake horsepower and is capable of
propelling the device at a maximum speed of not more than 30 miles per hour on
level ground.
By this definition, my moped is a motorized bicycle - the section even states
that a moped and a motorized bicycle are the same thing. See the top speed
listed as 30 mph. Here's the link:

Jenn, read the motorized bicycle section closer. The law clearly states
"motorized bicycle cannot go faster than 20 mph" and "A motorized bicycle
may be driven in a bicycle lane on a roadway...". If your moped "can" go
faster than 20mph, it is **not** a motorized bicycle.

Wait a minute, in your quote below, you actually wrote (as I cut and paste
from your section below):
"A motorized bicycle may be driven in a bicycle lane on a roadway at a
reasonable speed and with special care for bicyclists using the lane."
And then you conclude that riding a moped (a.k.a a motorized bicycle as per
section 406 which you also quoted) in the bike lane is NOT legal. I'll take
the DMV code you quoted over your personal analysis, in this case. From the
vehicle code, it is definitely legal to ride a moped/motorized bicycle in
the bike lane.
Perhaps you are confusing bike lanes with bike paths, their off-the-roadway
cousins.

There may be a bit of confusion on the bike lane legality:
[Vehicle Code (VC) 406(a) defines a motorized bicycle, commonly called a
moped,
as a two- or three-wheeled vehicle which can be temporarily propelled by
pedals
or by an electric motor. An automatic transmission connects the wheels to an
engine which produces less than 2 gross brake horsepower. It has a top speed
of
30 miles per hour on level ground.
A motorized bicycle is also defined (VC 406[b]) as a device which has fully
operative pedals for human propulsion and has an electric motor with an
output
of not more than 1,000 watts and cannot be driven at a speed of more than 20
mph on level ground. The motorized bicycle cannot go faster than 20 mph even
if
assisted by human power. These vehicles must operate so the electric motor
is
disengaged when the brakes are applied or when the starter switch or
mechanism
is released. A motorized bicycle may not be driven on a freeway, bicycle
path
or trail, equestrian trail, or hiking or recreation trail unless the path or
trail is on, or next to, a roadway or permission to use the trail or roadway
is
granted by local ordinance. A motorized bicycle may be driven in a bicycle
lane
on a roadway at a reasonable speed and with special care for bicyclists
using
the lane.]
It appears riding a moped (VC 406[a]) in the bicycle lane is NOT legal,
while
riding an ebike (VC 406[b]) or a scooter (the type with a 15mph top speed)
in
the bike lane is.

from bike paths. I'd be sceptical of mopeds in the bike lane though. For
one thing they go 30 mph. I don't want to share with them at that speed.

Ted I'd take the learn from fixing approach. I'd start out with modifing an
old golf cart. Some have four seats. Increase the voltage. to 48v to 72v
and you will have enough omph to go 25mph. This is the easy way. Another
approach is to convert a VW. They are plentyful and cheap here in
California. Lawrence Rhodes....

get some footage of Rod's van, which would be another time

You've been jumping???
I've been jumping!!
Will my little batteries hold up or will they blow on the first launch? Do I
have the right combinations of sprockets
to ensure a decent run while still protecting my motor and controller. Will I
have traction problems (I hope so)!!
Will I get skunked and not be able to finish the car because I forgot to bring
some stupid little insignificant part?
I am not in this for just myself now, it's all of us as a team. Will I make
some stupid decision and let us all down.
Granted "Gone Postal" had it's problems, and was still a great thing to watch.
But they had more than 1/2 a day to get
it running too! And they were able to test it on the street first. I'm
bringing a trailer full of old used parts(
mostly from elec-trak's) and we're trying to build a Jr. in just one afternoon.
Then again, we're not dealing with a
>700hp triple motor drivetrain. Just a simple 36v sep-ex unit being fed with 72
>volts worth of 13ah Hawker GP-EP's
through a 600amp Curtis. (which in a 400 lb car shouldn't do to bad)
Am I worried?? Naw it's not my nature.
I just won't be able to sleep next week....

I thank the EV list for the heads up about the program.
My impressions:
The drive belts were a joke. The belts used in the Choppers are much
beefier.
The guys were more concerned about the paint job then they were about the
drive reliability.
They forgot to tighten 'a' set screw? What is that all about? For high
torque, there should have been at least 2 set screws at 90 degrees to each
other.
On the positive side, they had many good ideas, good hands, good machine and
welding.
The Woodruff key looked about the size of the key in my 4 hp 36v/80 amp
floor scrubber motor.
Way undersized.
If they had done well at the track, the paint or lack thereof would have
been ignored.
The batteries and the Zilla were awesome. They did their homework. They
logged the battery voltages upon delivery, etc. The charger and the
charging meter seemed first class. No details were given.
The batteries/motor/wiring/controller all looked good to my novice eyes.
(Anyone recognize the motors?)
Back to paint. They 'needed' the paint the under vehicle motors in a tight
schedule project?
IMHO Vanity was the root of failure for this project.
I am interested in other opinions about the show.

While it's not the down and out race day Power of DC promises to be June
11th is also the 10th Annual REV show here in Vancouver, BC and we have
several local press coming out to cover the show. The site is bigger this
year with separate areas for the test drives and electrathon race and the
static displays. It is also the 100th anniversary of our Electric Tram that
runs between Science World and Granville Island and there are events
surrounding that on the 11th as well so we are expecting a bigger walk
through crowd this year.
The show runs from 10am to 4pm on Saturday June 11th and we would love to
see anyone who can make it.
For information go to www.veva.bc.ca <http://www.veva.bc.ca/> and click on

Hi Ryan and others who may be interested...
I have (thanks to John Lussmyer and Casa Del Gato for hosting) a little
photo gallery with some high-res images of Gone Postal, other EVs, Roderick,
and the folks hangin' with EV Parts that were taken in spring of '04. They
include many shot in the shop, at the track, and at Port Townsend's Earth
Day Celebration. Check it out here-

Here's the official definition page at the California DMV site:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d01/vc406.htm
People often get the two kinds of "motorized bicycles" mixed up - like I said
before, does your bike need a license? If not, you're legal in the bike lane.
Of course, you could just keep driving an unlicensed electric moped and never
get caught, but there are plenty of folks going 40 in a 25mph zone, too!
A bicyclist may be able to pedal over 20mph in a bike lane occupied by an ebike,
but the DMV doesn't define the top speed of a human-powered-only bike, and as
long as his pedalled speed isn't above the street's posted speed limit, he's
still legal. The ebike, however, is stuck at no more than 20mph, unless he
plans on doing all the things neccessary to qualify for a moped license, at
which time he is also kicked out of the bike lane.

Hi Ted,
First off, I don't think you want an EV for
camping. As an avid camper, I find that we do longer
trips when camping. EVs are currently (at least in
cheaper formats like mine) for short-haul commutes.
Suggest you go to:
www.budget.net/~bbath/CivicWithACord.html
then Mike Brown's book, "Convert It".
Welcome to the list!

If speed were the only goal, they would have built a dragster like
Current Eliminator.
But if you want to build something with presence, something that
people will remember and could pick out in a crowd instantly, the
postal van made a great choice.
I was at Las Vegas when the race was filmed. You have this big cube
of a vehicle, with a big wild-eyed eagle on the side, with tires that
mean business and a roll cage. I don't think there was anyone that
was able to walk by without stopping to look closer!

I've ordered EV springs from CSS also, and though they did a great job
of getting the rate and height correct, they took MANY weeks longer than
they originally quoted.

Subject: Rabbit front springs
Hi folks
I'm still gathering parts for my 83 Rabbit GTI conversion. But I'm having a
problem finding front springs that will carry the weight of 7 Yellowtop
Optimas. ElectroAuto has springs for 8, 6 volt batteries, much heavier than
7 Optimas. Any suggestions would be helpful. This is really holding me back.

That is very interesting comment. There was a vehicle that everyone stopped
to look at. It had a big wild-eyed eagle on the side.
And.....?

I see why you need sponsorship.
From the sponsor's poing of view - why pay $5k for something
you're probably going to break in a few seconds?
If you don't break anything - you aren't going fast enough. Bad.
So you probably will.
If you do - they get impression of unreliable creation which
only breaks - every time different part of it, unable to
finish, wasting their money. Bad again. Who wants to
associate their name with the thing which always breaks
(and pay for it)??
Of course their point of view differs from yours, but
unfortunately you seem to depend on them more than they
on you...
My point is if GP will sit and wait for someone just hand you
$5k for new gears (or any other potential victim part),
it may take very long time. May happen once, but unlikely you
can keep it running every season relying on that sort of income.
Is there a way to impress TV crews without breaking anything?
I realise it is against racing head spirit, but may serve
better convincing thousands who will be watching that EVs are
reliable and can cross the finish line once in a while...
People *may* associate breakdowns not with the fact that it is
sport, but with the fact that the vehicle being electric.
