Why did I add "invention disclosure" in the title?
Because I think this is a pretty novel Idea and I want to
make it public, so nobody else can claim rights to it and
get in our way ;-)

I'm failrly sure that this idea has been "invented" at least twice
before on this list alone :-)

There has definitely been a discussion about using a pilot signal with
some kind of existing connectors, and it does seem like a good idea.

Wireless? Yes, I've heard it before too, and I believe some people
have used a simple magnet and reed-switch arrangement with existing
connectors to make a safer system.

It was interesting to read about the variety of different (weird, and
incredibly dangerous looking) mains connectors you have in the US.
Over here things are a bit simpler - everyone uses the "EN 60309"
standard connectors which come in 16, 32 and 63A versions, 1 or 3
phase and up to 415V.
Most EVs use the 16A version. For my fast charger I used a 63A 240V
plug and socket which have a pilot signal pin, although I have not
used it. You can also buy "interlocked" switched outlets which don't
let you switch on until the plug is physically inserted, like this:

"I will be needing to get new tires on my new EV, a 1993 Ford Escort
converted by Soleq. It has currently 165/70 R13 tires, Goodyears in the
front and Michelins in the back, some bulging a bit and others slow
leaking."

"I was curious if there would be any rolling resistance advantage to
going with a larger wheel and a lower profile tire and still retain the
same braking performance and load carrying. (The vehicle with batteries
is a little over 4000 lbs.) I am not concerned too much with cornering
or steering response (other than basic safety) or cushy ride. Are there
other ways to improve the rolling resistance? What replacement tires
could be recommended?"

I had the same problem with my old 1986 solar electric escort. The
weight was up there. The stock escort wheels were like
165/(something)R13. they couldn't get that wide a tire in the goodyear
invictas, so they went 10 mm smaller! The load they were carrying was
in excess of their load rating by several hundred pounds! This led to
all sorts of safety problems going around corners. The car would "wag
it's tail" as the sidewalls flexed back and forth!

The solution was simple. Escort GT wheels. My scrapyard was full of
them and they said they were actually one of the more popular items.
They are 15" wheels, and the stock tire size is P205/65 (I think) R15.
This is an increase, but it really isn't too much, it maintains the
stock tire outer diameter, so there is no speedometer adjustment
needed, and you know they fit! You can go to tirerack.com and enter
the standard escort and the GT escort to find the exact stock tire size
for each. I'm sure I messed up the numbers. These use a larger tire,
but it is needed for the weight! This is probably your easiest, least
expensive option, and your handling will improve.

After talking with a knowledgeable tire guy, I went with Bridgestone
potenza RE910's. They are rated for the load, have a higher max.
pressure (44 psi vs. 35), shorter sidewalls due to the larger wheels,
and they get good traction in wet and dry conditions, plus they are
relatively low resistance due to the compound and tread design (but the
910's are not optimized for that - potenza RE92's are Original
equipment on lots of hybrids, and are more optimized, though IIRC the
treadlife rating for the 92's isn't as good as the rating on the
RE910's). I do believe that energy is wasted when the sidewalls flex
excessively, so shorter, stiffer sidewalls and higher pressures do help
reduce rolling resistance.

I noticed no difference in range, although I can't offer hard data on
that - it's been quite a while, and the vehicle has been sold for some
time. However, the handling difference was like night and day! I
could take corners with confidence, knowing that I wouldn't leave the
road or lose traction, and I didn't have to compensate for
"tail-wagging" anymore. And when it was rainy, I could stop quickly
and retain control.

Sadly, the 910's and the other tires I liked so much on our old ICE
car, Firestone FT70c's, are no longer produced, but similar tires are
available. I'm trying a pair of Fuzion HRi's on my ICE now. They have
a higher pressure rating for the same size tires, and reviews suggest
they improve rolling resistance. Time will tell on these.

Then I got an adaptor to fit that shaft with its pulleys to the etek which
ended up being mounded on about 2 1/2" spacers. Not the greatest or possible
best long term way but it has worked for over a season so far. I also kinda
hogtied 40 BB600 cells which I wasn't using for 48 volts of 30 amp nicad

My interpretation of Article 625 is that if an AC outlet is installed
and labeled for the purpose of charging electric vehicles, then Article
625 applies. If an outlet is not specifically labeled for recharging
electric vehicles, then it's just an outlet and is regulated like any
other outlet.

To me, this means we can install suitable outlets and use them as we wish,
as long as there is no specific use label on the outlet.

If we want them labeled as "Electric Vehicle Recharging Stations" we need
to either use only 120v outlets or use something like an Avcon system.

If we don't label the outlet as "Electric Vehicle Recharging Stations",
we have to accept that we may find the occaisional RV parked in the spot.
We also have to accept that the parking spot next to the outlet must be
reserved with something other than an "Electric Vehicles Only" sign, lest
this imply that the outlet has a specific purpose.

The other day, I was happily cruising around with my truck at around 200A
when my controller signaled 'over heating' and sent me to the
right-of-way. Now: I have an DCP-1200 Raptor and it should be able to
manage > 200A continously. After a short break, the LED was cleared, power
restored and I went on driving keeping current at 150A.

It was hot that day but I was going around 65 (= plenty of air pushing
into the engine compartment) and the controllers fan was working
perfectly.

Question: Could that behaviour be considered to be 'normal'? And how would
I be able to improve the situation?

--- End Message ---
--- Begin Message --- .Hi Mike I may be the most satisfied Ev mower owner on the list , I use mine for my lawn business somthing cutting more that 10 yards a day with it. you can see my mower 1/2 down the page at http://www.grassrootsev.com/projects.htm I've cut lawns so thin that no gas mower could tuch them. But as I have a 8" net gain motor and 120v 400 amp crutis con troller ( yes this would run a car :-) and am running 96v , 8 orbitals,

You could buy one used; or look at one to get ideas for doing your
own conversion.

That's the recommendation I'm getting frequently. There are a couple within an hours drive from here that I may look at. I like tinkering though, so I find it more appealing to convert my gas mower to electric - especially if I could do it for roughly the same cost as buying a 30 year old electric tractor and bringing it back to working condition.

I think your right here , restoring can be costly , finding the right parts ect , where the mower you showed is commen , the elec trak is a little like the ev 1 , a great mower but not common .

I'd like
to get a rough idea of how much it might cost me to do the gas-electric conversion to compare to the cost of buying one of those old Elec-Traks (another drawback as I see it for the elec-traks is that most have a front mount mower deck rather than under the belly, which would make it more difficult to fit into our garage).

yep ,

The garden tractor style of riding lawm mower is the best start. Cheap
riding mowers are too flimsily built, and can't carry enough batteries
to bother with.

The mower you have would do fine , don't get to hung up on loading it down with batteies , as a home owner , you could mow for 15 minites then charge and do other stuff , mow , charge , mow charge .

The one I have is the same as this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7761400583&category=50377&fkxs=1
It's a 14.5 hp tractor with a 42" deck. It seems very sturdy, and should have room for at least 4 12V batteries (or possibly 6 6v or 8v) batteries. I'm wondering if it would be better to salvage a motor, controller, etc. from an old electric golf cart, or find new/used ones. Hell, I could probably make my own controller I suppose....

yes a golf cart motor would work, if you can fine one with a shaft instead of a hole, and the old coil of wire controller the used is also good , I went with the orbitals , cus my discharge is less that an hour, and I needed the voltage to be hi so as to be close to my EV trucks voltage for dump charging ,

A friend and I converted his old Wheel Horse garden tractor to electric.
It was a pretty simple process. We replaced the dead 8hp gas engine with
a 1.5hp 24v electric motor, and a separate 24v 3/4hp motor for the mower
deck. We initially used two 12v deep-cycle batteries, but mowing time
was too short (20 minutes). We replaced these to four 6v golf cart

Does it have a manual or hydrostatic tranny? This gas mower has a hydrostatic (automatic) tranny. I'm not at all familiar with those, so I'm not sure how the motor will attach to it.

I have the hydrostatic tranny's also , I'd go with one bigger motor and put it right where the gas was , .
As Rod Hower told me when I was on the fence , Go for it , , and I did :-)
I don't know what was more fun , seeing Bob Rice smoke the tires on my race truck or mowing the lawn with my ev mower ,

In the past I have heard of people making motors our of altenators. I
was curious and discovered just ho inneficeint claw pole alternators were.

But yesturday I was cruising ebay and came accross a mess of motorcycle
stators and flywheels
like : item number 4586929481
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4586929481&ssPageName=MERC_VI_RSII_Pr4_PcY_BIN_Stores_IT

I was thinking that because motorcycles are weight consious, maybe the
stator is more efficient than normal ICE counterpart.

The inside out design would let a person mount a tire/rim to "flywheel"

A set might make an interesting go-cart from hell ??

  Hi Michaela;

I regularly pull 200 amps plus on the hiway in the Rabbit to go
65-70MPH with my Rapture(Raptor) What amazes me with these critters is how
seldom, MY fan runs. OOh if I use it in to a high gear, or for say stump
pulling, no joke, EV's are great tractors, in the electric locomotive
heritage.

As for it being normal, I wouldn't think so. Maybe the controller garus
can take it from here?

    My two watts worth

Subject: Re: Gun Engine?

A: Well I'm glad you asked. A standard automotive engine runs on
gasoline and produces shaft horsepower. My new Gun engine runs on bunk
with a 12-phase cycle due to its internal Fairy Dust coating on all
combustion chamber surfaces. It literally breaks all known physical and
thermodynamic laws simply by not bothering to learn about them.

Of course he's bunk. The flaws in his technical reasoning are many,
spackled over with conclusive-sounding wording of a motivational
speaker. It's really not worth getting into.

Generally any claims featured on a site with "Lightning Power", "Zero
Point Energy", and "Magnet-Powered Motors" (not electric motors using
magnets, we're talking motors powered by a permanent magnet alone)
should be taken with a healthy degree of skepticism.

Steve, your picture mowbatmoni shows what looks like battery monitors, what
/ where etc did you come up with these? The look pretty heavy duty.

Pedroman

That's a hell of a lawnmower!

Subject: Re: converting a gas mower to electric

.Hi Mike I may be the most satisfied Ev mower owner on the list , I use
mine for my lawn business somthing cutting more that 10 yards a day with it.

you can see my mower 1/2 down the page at
http://www.grassrootsev.com/projects.htm
I've cut lawns so thin that no gas mower could tuch them. But as I have a 8"

net gain motor and 120v 400 amp crutis con troller ( yes this would run a
car :-) and am running 96v , 8 orbitals,

I think your right here , restoring can be costly , finding the right parts
ect , where the mower you showed is commen , the elec trak is a little like
the ev 1 , a great mower but not common .

 I'd like

yep ,

The mower you have would do fine , don't get to hung up on loading it down
with batteies , as a home owner , you could mow for 15 minites then charge
and do other stuff , mow , charge , mow charge .

yes a golf cart motor would work, if you can fine one with a shaft instead
of a hole, and the old coil of wire controller the used is also good , I
went with the orbitals , cus my discharge is less that an hour, and I
needed the voltage to be hi so as to be close to my EV trucks voltage for
dump charging ,

I have the hydrostatic tranny's also , I'd go with one bigger motor and put
it right where the gas was , .
As Rod Hower told me when I was on the fence , Go for it , , and I did :-)
I don't know what was more fun , seeing Bob Rice smoke the tires on my race

truck or mowing the lawn with my ev mower ,
