Hi david etc,Didn't Forest Gump say "You can't fix stupid"?Best Regards,Mark in Roanoke, VA www.REEVA.info Subject: Re: [EVDL] power generated by passing a wire through a magneticfield Message-ID: <[email protected]>
I think part of the problem with this is that many of the "generator on the wheel' folks are thinking like ICE-heads. As they see it, you can recharge the starting battery of an ICEV from the engine while you're driving down the road. Why can't you recharge the traction battery of an EV from its motor in the same way, they wonder. None of their teachers has ever taught them about conservation of energy - I mean REALLY taught it, with examples to demonstrate. They can't grasp the concept intuitively, so it just isn't part of their world. The best luck I've had so far in explaining this has been by using the bike generator headlight example. I remind them of what it's like to pedal a bike uphill when the headlight is on. Then I say "it's kind of like that with an EV. You put a generator on the wheel and the drag will slow the car down so much that you won't be able to get anywhere." If they've ever ridden a bike with a generator headlight, this often works. If not, it almost never does. And sometimes it just doesn't register, no matter what. All they know is that ICEV alternator, and they just can't shake it. I really don't have any other answers to this. It's a fundamental problem related to execrably, irresponsibly poor education. I don't think you can fix that in the quarter hour or so you have to spend with these folks. Sometimes you just have to say, "Well, why don't you go home and build one? You might be the guy who can make it work and get rich!" - and then walk away.
