I think if you consider the complexity and the feature level
(over-the-air status inquiry and even software download requires that
there is an always-on transceiver in the vehicle; most new cars have
several dozen computers, the majority of them only powered while
driving, but there are plenty that need to stay on for all kinds of
tasks, from touchless entry to monitoring programmed tasks and
maintaining status, keeping an eye on temperature and charge level and
so on and then the power that the BMS of so many cells will take - even
if at every level only a fraction of a Watt is consumed, with so many
cells it adds up...

Apparently they were able to put a couple more computers to sleep that
were kept in a high level of standby to start fast, now the driver may
need to wait a few seconds before driving away due to the computers not
ready yet.

In design, everything is a trade-off.

So, if they are losing 8 miles of range a day, that roughly translates
into 100 watts of draw just sitting there, "off".  That seems like very
poor electronics design to me.
