Typically, Ethernet is used for this. For a few bucks you get a media converter from twisted pair 100 Base-T Ethernet to fiber 100 Base-FX If you need to embed into a product then you may need to find the actual optical driver and interface, otherwise you can buy the converter in a box for a few bucks on Ebay.

I wanted to ask the gurus on here if they know of any simple AC modulation ICs. I need to transmit a 1Mbps intermittent digital signal over a 100Mbps fiber transceiver. The fiber transceiver has a high pass input on it's receiver so I need to encode my intermittent message on a carrier wave of some sort. Continuously transmitting the message is not an option. So any PSK or VCO chips out there that operate in the 100MHz region? I also need a decoder chip on the receiver end of course.
