As the predecessor to BMW’s upcoming i3, the small family sedan is currently being leased by approximately 700 drivers in the United States. As AutoBlog reports, a little over half of these lessees will be affected by the recall. The particular 1 Series ActiveE vehicles that are being recalled were manufactured by BMW between August 17, 2011 and December 19, 2011. The Problem The German automaker fears that the connection between the electric motor and the car’s transmission will wear down overtime due to a potential shortage of lubrication on the gear shaft. If that happens during operation, the EV might suddenly come to a halt without giving warning to the driver. Obviously, if this happens on a busy road, an accident is likely to result, which in turn may cause injury to any passengers who have the misfortune to be involved. The Solution Because only 360 vehicles are thought to be affected, BMW will notify owners of the recall via telephone. Owners will be asked to bring the cars into a BMW authorized dealer for an inspection and a free repair if necessary. Until then, they can contact either the NHTSA or BMW for more information. The phone number for the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline is 888-327-4236, and their website is [SaferCar.gov]. BMW can be reached via phone as well at 800-525-7417, or via email at [CustomerRelations @bmwusa.com]. To reference the recall with the NHTSA—use campaign ID number 13V017000.
