California Gov. Jerry Brown joined leaders from UPS, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Stockton vehicle manufacturer Electric Vehicles International at the UPS distribution center on Shore Street to mark the occasion. UPS is deploying 100 zero-emission, all-electric delivery vehicles that will deliver packages throughout the state. The fleet of trucks will help California achieve widespread deployment of zero-emission vehicles, as called for under an executive order by the governor. “These all-electric vehicles remind us that California continues to be a dynamic center of innovation,” Brown said. “These trucks were built here, they’ll be driven here and they’re already changing the way business is done here — cutting emissions and eliminating the need for tanker trucks worth of fossil fuels.” The UPS electric trucks were manufactured in Stockton by EVI. The trucks will reduce the consumption of conventional motor fuel by about 126,000 gallons per year. The vehicles have a range of up to 75 miles and will deliver packages to customers in Sacramento, San Bernardino, Ceres, Fresno and Bakersfield. UPS already operates more than 2,500 alternative fuel vehicles worldwide with a variety of hybrid, electric and natural gas technologies. “We use our technology and logistics expertise to reduce emissions around the world and help test new automotive technologies,” Myron Gray, president of U.S. operations for UPS, said in a news release. Partners involved in the project’s success include the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, California Air Resources Board, California Energy Commission, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Sacramento, San Joaquin and South Coast air districts.
