The Nissan Leaf went on sale three years ago and is now available in a number of world markets. Nissan announced on Thursday that the Leaf crossed over 50,000th sales barrier, making it the best-selling pure-electric vehicle of all-time. Those 50,000 Leafs, according to Nissan, have collectively traveled more than 162 million gas-free miles. The largest contributor to that running tally is a two-year-old Leaf located in Japan with more than 108,000 miles on the clock. Although the 50,000 unit mark is a significant milestone for Nissan, the Japanese automaker was expecting to reach that goal much sooner. Nissan predicted it would sell a total of 40,000 Leafs in the United States between 2011 and 2012, but only managed to sell about half that number. Leaf sales have also been slow-going in Europe, where just 7,000 units have found new homes since launching in 2010.
