Couriers turn over new Leaf

Geazone, the Victoria cargo-bike couriers hauling everything from office
supplies to beer kegs around town, have added an electric vehicle to its
peddle-power fleet. Owner Andrew Mitchell said the Nissan Leaf car allows
Geazone to service areas further afield — Langford, Sidney and Duncan —
while continuing with its businesses philosophy of being emission-free. The
Leaf’s rear seats were removed and replaced with a cargo hold as there are
currently no electric vans on the market, said Mitchell, adding the electric
car “has opened a lot of doors” and Geazone is bringing aboard new clients
and adding staff. The company displaced more than two tonnes of carbon
emissions last year using bikes to deliver goods, said Mitchell ...

Want to know you’re making a real difference?

It’s one thing to be aware of the need for change; it’s quite another to get
busy and make a difference. That’s exactly what GeaZone is doing. With
ingenuity and energy, founder Andrew Mitchell and business partners Jared
Noble and Jeff Austin are providing Victoria with human-fuelled,
emissions-free delivery services. They have been in business since January
2012 and have 75 retailers on board. Of course, The Edge Food Energy Company
was one of the first to sign on.

A little background on these ecopreneurs

Mitchell, Noble and Austin were friends first, and are now working together
to grow sustainability in their community. Each one brings unique skills to
the table.

Mitchell has a Business Administration degree from the U of Vic. He says his
time at school gave him some of the tools he’s needed to start a business,
but the learning curve in the real world is steep and ongoing. He loves the
challenge.

Noble graduated from Camosun College’s Environmental Technology and General
Science program and is keenly interested in growing a consulting business
that compliments what GeaZone is doing. He currently has a project to
“green” the Victoria Conference centre.

Austin is a Business student at the U of Vic and is interested in IT and
mobile application development. His expertise in this area has helped
GeaZone further its mandate by offering paperless billing. Customers sign
invoices and get receipts on mobile devices.

Numbers don’t lie

Noble’s and Austin’s efforts on the bikes mean they get plenty of exercise;
it also means our air is a little cleaner at the end of the day. A unique,
value-added service that GeaZone came up with allows customers to go online
and see the route and distance their goods are traveling, and the emissions
saved by using a bicycle courier. In this, their first year of business, 2
tonnes of carbon emissions have been saved.

Stepping it up and plugging in

‘MPGe’ is a rating known as Miles-Per-Gallon-equivalent, meaning the
distance an electric car can travel on the same amount of energy as that
contained in 1 gallon of gasoline. The 2013 Nissan Leaf is rated at 130 MPGe
on the EPA city cycle and 102 MPGe on the highway cycle, for a combined
rating of 115 MPGe. There’s no range rating yet for the 2013 Leaf. Geazone
and The Edge Food Energy Company will soon discover how far we can go
leading the way with sustainable mandates. This is the electric vehicle that
Geazone has chosen to expand their popular service. The Edge Food Energy
Company is proud to have partnered with Geazone to help propel this
innovative service. In Support of our friends at Geazone, We have branded
their first all electric vehicle. Look for us all about the Victoria BC area
and beyond.

What’s not to love?

A big part of The Edge Food Energy Co’s mandate is to be as ecologically
responsible as possible. We were delighted to learn that our Victoria
distribution could be handled by a business that has a similar mandate.
Small changes matter. They inspire others to follow suit. We’re proud to be
associated with GeaZone Eco-couriers. Thanks for doing what you’re doing!
