BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - How much ambition did you have as a college
student? Were you ready to start a company?

Two Purdue University engineer students say they are and already did.

Students Drew Westrick and Grant Chapman and a few friends created E-V-C
Racing.

They've done enough to earn an invitation to Canada, to the Vancouver Auto
Show.

The duo will show the electric go-karts they design and hope to sell them.

The potential is even greater.

“What we're trying to do here is push the current technology to its limits,”
Chapman said. “Find (those limits) and maybe go a little bit past."

"So, hopefully, the technology we build will be in your car 10, 20 years
from now,” he added.

The young men said they're trying to buy from Indiana suppliers whenever
possible - from the batteries to the kart chassis'. They have created a kart
that can reach a top speed of about 75 mph and a battery that will last 15
miles during a race.

EVC Kart Wins Third Annual Electric Vehicle Grand Prix!
by Drew Westrick May 2 2012

We are proud to announce that the Electric Vehicle Club took home first
place at the third annual Purdue Electric Vehicle Grand Prix this last
weekend. The race started out a little rocky with a black flag and tire
coming off within the first three laps of the race. Yellow cautions were
abundant, but with driver Jimmy Simpson behind the wheel of an otherwise
dominant kart we were able to fight back to the top with a drive, great
energy strategy, and a final sprint to the finish line. In the final laps of
the race we were able to improve upon our record setting practice time of
26.1 seconds to finish the day with an overall fastest lap time of 25.9. We
were just 0.1 seconds shy of the poll setting lap time for the gas Grand
Prix this year! Included below are some photos from the event. The EVC
Racing team will be back in action again on May 12th at the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway on opening day at the track. We hope to see you all there.

Kart Specs:
Motor: HPEV AC-9 Three Phase AC Induction
Controller: Curtis 1236 72V-300A
Battery: Custom Build with AllCell phase change material using 600 (20s-30p)
18650s (Prototype Cells from Tesla’s Roadster Model)
BMS System: Custom wireless BMS controller and telemetry system (TI based)
using Linear 6803 BMS boards.
Frame: Modified 2002 Margay
Fastest Lap Time: 25.94s (EV Record at Purdue Track)
